Message by the Mayor and Governor of Vienna, Dr. Michael Häupl to the participants of the 10th European Software Conference (ESWC) on the 6th and 7th of November 2010 in Vienna.

Message by the Mayor and Governor of Vienna,
Dr. Michael Häupl to the participants of the
10th European Software Conference (ESWC) on the 6th and 7th of November 2010 in Vienna.

A warm welcome to Vienna. As Mayor of the Austrian federal capital I am delighted that the 10th European Software Conference is held in our city.

Vienna is firmly established among the leading business locations in Europe. It features many qualities that are very attractive for foreign enterprises, combining efficient business promotion and the highest research rate in the whole of Austria with excellent quality of living, unique environmental conditions, high safety standards and cultural diversity. At the same time, it is known for its highly qualified labour force and balanced policies benefiting both entrepreneurs and employees.

As a European city, Vienna has built a particularly strong reputation in the fields of high technology, life sciences, environmental technology, creative industries, information and communications technology as well as transport telematics. Thanks to the local business community, with its high share of small and medium-sized enterprises and dynamic development, the Austrian federal capital is one of the most productive cities in Europe. For instance, more than half of all local businesses were founded less than ten years ago, and by now Vienna has become one of the top IT locations in Europe. In cooperation with all these enterprises, we aim to continue our active economic policy so they may benefit from the opportunities opened up by EU enlargement to Eastern and South Eastern Europe.

Vienna has consistently achieved top rankings in the annual Mercer survey on quality of living in international cities, and was even ranked first in the 2009 survey. Excellent quality of living, however, requires a clear commitment and sufficient resources. Therefore only economic success can guarantee that Vienna remains just as liveable in the future, and that everyone who lives and works here as well as all our guests will continue to feel at home in our city.
On this note, I would like to wish you a successful stay in Vienna and a productive exchange of opinions during the 10th European Software Conference. If you have any time to spare, let me invite you to take the opportunity and get to know our city.
